Online Infidelity Soars With Economy, Lay-offs

Losing one’s job after years with a certain company can – and even does these days – mean more than just a financial hit that will have one spending more time at home trying to find a new position. As the increasing number of members of infidelity websites (destined especially for married people looking for other married people) shows, the many lay-offs seem to have found a cure in no-strings-attached romances.

Leaving aside the moral implications of these “campaigns,” they are presented as the best method to alleviate stress and take one’s mind from the financial hardships one is facing. It’s fun, does not involve any longtime commitment and, what’s best, it implies meeting someone who faces the same risks as you do. In the UK alone, as the Daily Mail informs, not only have these websites flourished into a highly lucrative business, but the number of members is also increasing exponentially.

“In the past six months, we’ve seen a 25 per cent increase in members versus the previous six months, and it’s certainly being driven by the recession.” David Rees, the founder and director of MarriedAndLooking, says for the aforementioned publication.

Cheating Partners Exposed with PInow.com’s Valentine’s Day Infidelity Quiz

DENVER, CO — February 6, 2009 — For years private investigators have been touting Valentine’s Day as the number one day for cheaters. However, most people do not even recognize every day activities as signs of cheating. Affairs often continue for years without the other spouse’s awareness. PInow.com, a directory of local pre-screened private investigators, has created a free online quiz for suspicious spouses. This quick and easy quiz will create awareness for attentive partners who are ready to act. To take the infidelity quiz, visit http://www.pinow.com/resources/infidelity.php

“This year, PInow.com hopes to offer a bit of reassurance to those who may have infidelity concerns, and help those who may be correct about those suspicions,” said PInow.com Co-founder Trent Carlyle. “It is often easier to catch cheaters around Valentine’s Day because they want to spend time with both their spouses and lovers so slip-ups occur. Many cheaters will withdraw large amounts of money to purchase extravagant gifts for their partners — ringing alarm bells for those who aren’t on the receiving end of the gifts.”

Using these and other tell-tale signs of infidelity, partners can arm themselves with evidence and stop the disastrous pattern of infidelity. The best thing a worried partner can do is to prepare. Oftentimes, what started out as just an inkling of suspicion will prove to be accurate. Studies have confirmed it, showing that 85 percent of women and 50 percent of men who suspected that their partner was cheating were ultimately correct.

The Infidelity Detectives

Peter Jones was taking out the rubbish one evening when he noticed a scrap of paper caught at the bottom of the bin. “It was part of a torn email,” he says. “Suggestive words, like 'horny’, jumped out at me.” Jones didn’t leap to conclusions, but mentioned it to his wife. She was furious and told him not to be stupid. She swore it was a friend “having a laugh”.

Her over-defensive reaction gnawed at him. Within a day of finding the email, Jones had tapped “infidelity” into Google and was talking to Steve Grayson of the Infidelity Detective Agency, a Hertfordshire-based team of private investigators into matrimonial cases.

The Young and the Restless

In 2006, about 19% of married men and 13% of married women under the age of 30 said that they had been unfaithful to their spouse. Do those numbers sound high? They certainly are if we compare them with the results of a survey 15 years before, when the respective numbers were roughly 13% and 11%. A "mere" two-percentage-point increase for women and a six-percentage-point increase for men may not sound like much, but to put it another way: Between 1991 and 2006, the numbers of unfaithful wives under 30 increased by 20% and husbands by a whopping 45%. These numbers come from a study conducted by David Atkins of the University of Washington Center for the Study of Health and Risk Behaviors. Mr. Atkins, who reached these conclusions by breaking down data from the National Opinion Research Center's General Social Survey, presented his findings at the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies conference in Orlando earlier this month.
